ABOUT THE BUSINESS
In 1997 Humphrey co-founded Tanglewood Investments, a private equity investment firm focused on turnaround and distressed investing in the global manufacturing industry. Since startup, Tanglewood acquired 22 businesses which have been assembled into five operating groups. Three of the groups have been sold to long-term owners. Our remaining operating companies include Ameriforge Group (www.ameriforge.com), a $400 million provider of riser components and sub-systems required by offshore drilling rig operators, internal components used in GE gas-fired turbines, and components for the aerospace industry. We also own Verantis Environmental Solutions (www.verantis.com), a global provider of engineered equipment required by diverse customers in the semiconductor, LCD flat panel, fiber optic cable, and specialty chemical industries to ensure compliance with local and international environmental regulations. Verantis operates engineering and manufacturing facilities in Shanghai, Singapore, Mumbai and Cleveland, Ohio.Prior to forming Tanglewood, Humphrey served as President of Yellowstone Capital in Houston. While at Yellowstone, Humphrey led the turnaround and sale of the Utopia Spring Water Company to the Perrier Group of Nestle Foods. Before his seven years at Yellowstone Humphrey worked in the investment banking department of Smith Barney, Harris Upham for 9 years, the last two as a Managing Director with a focus on financial restructuring and mergers & acquisitions. Humphrey received a BS Civil Engineering degree from Texas A&M in 1978 and an MBA from Harvard in 1981.
Mr. Humphrey and his wife Janene live in Houston, and have been married for 26 years. Their two children, Philip and Michelle, are students at UT Austin where Philip is studying International Relations/Chinese and Michelle is pursuing a degree in Advertising.
The Humphreys are active members of the First Baptist Church in Houston. Their volunteer focus is on programs that equip the poor with spiritual training and practical support to break cycles of poverty, including the Prison Entrepreneurship Program, where Humphrey has served as Board Chair for two years, and the Yellowstone Academy, an inner-city faith based private school geared to families with less than $15,000 income per year. Humphrey also serves as the Finance Chair for the Board of Trustees of Houston Christian High School.
